Nantes is a town in western France at the northern end of the Bay of Biscay. It’s the sixth largest city in France, with a population of around 600,000 people in the wider urban area. Nantes has a history as an important French port — a thriving shipbuilding industry and trade center helped put Nantes on the world map. The city used to be known as the “Venice of the West” due to the number of waterways extending off of the River Loire which runs through the city. In more modern times those canals have been filled in in order to make space for the growing population. Today, Nantes is an industrial city (especially on the outskirts), including several renewable energy companies as well an Airbus manufacturing plant.
